Chanel: 6 Things You Didn’t Know About The J12

Other Brands

IMAGE: CHANEL

Think J12 and the following probably comes to mind. Iconic, sporty and all that gorgeous high-tech ceramic. But that’s about it really. It’s been worn by a myriad of celebrities, it’s its own model in ad campaigns, it’s even popular with both boys and girls, but beyond that, I knew zilch about what truly makes a J12 a J12.

Which led me on a personal quest of sorts to find out more about this timepiece, one that I myself have been attracted to for the longest time (it is, after all, one of the 3 timepieces that’s still floating on my wish list). And because only by truly understanding how and what it is all about inside and out is the only way I’ll be able to appreciate it even more, here’s part 1 of a two-part post since I’d rather not overwhelm you on my first attempt.

Without further ado, here goes.

IMAGE: CHANEL

#1 – For starters, not many know that white wasn’t even the first colour the J12 was launched in; it was black, and that came out in 2000. I would have assumed otherwise, since the one in white high-tech ceramic has become the de facto face of the J12. In truth, the white one (which we are all certainly more familiar with), came out 3 years later in 2003. #mindblown

#2 – Although it is popular with the ladies today, it was created by a man who was seeking to make a watch that he himself would wear. The watch’s face is inspired by the speedometers you see on nautical vessels. Its name (J12) isn’t a reference to Coco Chanel or anything linked to her past; J is reference to the J-class yachts that race in sailing competitions like the America’s Cup. The 12? It’s the length of the yacht in metres used in this class, thus, the J12. #mindblown

#3 – Used more commonly in knifes, body armour and even space shuttle capsules, Chanel wasn’t the first to employ the use of high-tech ceramics, but they were the ones who refined it to the highest degree, a lustrous high-shine material that is non-porous and keeps its colour consistent. It won’t fade, or ‘yellow’ for that matter, and it is said that J12 watches made many years ago look exactly like the brand new ones you’ll see displayed within the glass cases in Chanel boutiques today. Which is saying a lot as far as longevity is concerned, right? #mindblown

Stay tuned for part 2 next week, and if anyone has any questions regarding the J12, just drop a comment here and let me do the research for you. And I’ll be right back with the second part in a week or so.

To celebrate its latest watch, the J12 Moonphase, Chanel has created a short film that imagines what it would be like to delve inside the timepiece's housing.

Why such a romantic notion for a watch based on technical innovation? It includes a complication that tracks the four phases of the moon, with symbols representing each phase located on a blue aventurine disc that looks like the night sky. The imagery in the film befits this watch's heavenly aspirations: everything in it is white, including a stallion seen galloping to the edge of a snow-covered cliff and a sailboat on a gently moving lake.

Chanel is making a big splash with its newest Extra Mini Wallet On Chain. Wait, what? Yes, an extra mini wallet on chain and you read it right.

Taking a look at it, it kinda made a big impression on us since it sports a look we’ve never seen before. It’s such a breath of fresh air, no wait, it’s such a beautiful wallet to look at. A work of art on its own, Chanel really pushed its limits this time around and the result is pretty stunning and practical at the same time.

The shape of this Wallet On Chain Bag is new – usually a WOC is bigger in width, but this one appears to be more of the shape of a phone case. Anyway, the design is completely the same as the Classic Flap bag including a back pocket. It also comes with a gorgeous front flap featuring a stunning CC logo and interwoven chain link.

Made from lambskin and ruthenium metal, this wallet on chain bag is too cute not to mention! With practicality in mind, imagine never ever losing your wallet from your sight since it has a chained strap perfect for carrying around with your hands.

Dior is really making moves to step up their game. PurseBop has extensively covered Dior’s new Diorever bag, and believes it might just be the best bag. Other big changes for Dior include the appointment of new creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Valentino’s past creative director. Chiuri is Dior’s first female creative director in its 70-year long history, and she is bound to bring some exciting, fresh energy to the line.

Dior is giving us more reasons to become infatuated by releasing new bags! Two new bags have been added to the Diorama line: The Diorama Club Bag and Diorama Satchel Bag.

The Diorama Club and Diorama Satchel debuted in the Fall/Winter 2016 collection. Both bags are re-creations of the iconic Diorama bag. Let’s take a look at the biggest differences…

The Diorama Club bag is smaller and slightly more square than the original Diorama. The Diorama Club has an oversized badge clasp with a contrasting  border. It can be carried over the shoulder or crossbody style.

Dior describes the Diorama Club as “the perfect evening bag” and the large badge is meant to make a statement.

The Diorama Satchel Bag has the same crest shape clasp and large cannage design motif as the original Diorama. However, the shape is slightly bigger, wider at the base, and  more trapezoidal like a traditional satchel bag. New features include double gussets on the side and adjustable strap. It can be carried over the shoulder or crossbody style.

In contrast to the original, sleek and modern Diorama, the Diorama Satchel is more ladylike and feminine.

Walk into any Dior boutique nowadays and you’ll be greeted with a huge selection of bags and SLGs, which was what happened when I walked into the store recently. Feeling slightly overwhelmed at first (and I mean this in a good way), very soon I was floating like a butterfly from display case to display case. There were bags galore, and even more SLGs, from wallets to small wristlets and everything else in-between.

One of the bags that I missed out on is this, which I’ll be definitely checking out this week. From Dior’s Fall 2016 collection, it’s the Diorama Satchel, a more casual take on the elegant Diorama that we are all now familiar with. Measuring 27.5 cm by 20 cm, it features gusseted sides with two main compartments in the interior, which are separated with a zip pocket that runs across the middle. Functional? Yes.

But more than function, it’s the detailing of the Diorama Satchel in this particular colour that most excites me. Firstly, it comes in grained calfskin, which is a leather that many of you know I have an extreme fondness for. Then it’s the tone-on-tone stitching, the tiniest of CDs engraved on the metal top handle and what makes this a satchel, the additional of a canvas shoulder sling that’s finished with leather on both ends.

Yes, it’s basically the Diorama meets schoolboy satchel, and this colour (is it Camel? Sand? Maybe even Wheat) is just stunning. Yes. Stunning. Wear the bag with or without the canvas sling, which also means you carry it one of 3 ways, across the body, over the shoulder or just via its slightly shorter metal top handle.

Priced at SGD5500, you’ll find this sporty-luxe beauty at Dior boutiques at ION Orchard, Marina Bay Sands and of course, Ngee Ann City. If this colour doesn’t work for you (oh, the travesty of it all), it also comes in Black, Grey and a deep greenish-blue they call Agave.

IMAGE: DIOR

If the bags in full leather ain’t your thing, you’ll also find half-exotics like this one in lizard, and something called Dior Print fabric that’s a throwback to its monogram days. Love that too, but more on that in another post. Soon. I promise.

Chanel Luxurious Beach Tote and Towel set

Other Brands

Beach Tote and Towel set In some ways, the world’s richest people are just like any of us; they breathe the same air, drink the same water, yet life holds no secrets for them. We’re sure any experience would feel way more appealing when the sky’s the limit and you don’t have to learn how to balance your taxes. The same goes with style, aromas, scents – and Chanel knows this better than any other brand.

Do you have a chic terrycloth beach set from Chanel? Well, no one else has one yet, as it’s just been revealed. Chanel can afford to manufacture exclusive pieces that would put a financial strain on a smaller brand. The aforementioned set, made of a beach tote and towel, is part of the brand’s Metiers d’Art 2016 Paris in Rome collection and will cost exactly $1,650.

Beach Tote and Towel set

Made of cotton terrycloth, patterned to look like the classic Chanel tweed, this exquisite set shows off a practical color variation, and it will be apparently perfect for everyday use. But considering that price-tag, we doubt this set will be tossed around as any other similar beach set would be.

We all have different standards, but no one shall ignore the intended purpose of this Chanel beach set, meant to be a stylish takeaway for a day at the beach, as well as a powerful statement for those people who are aware of what they’re seeing.

Chanel Makes the Most Luxurious Beach Bag and Towel Set Ever

The very wealthy are both just like us mortals and not like us at all. They’re like us in that they want to have cute stuff to take to the pool with their friends or on their next beach vacation, but they are not like us in that their next terrycloth beach set might be from Chanel.

Chanel-Beach-Tote-and-Towel-2

The beauty of Chanel’s size is that it can afford to manufacture the kind of fun, idiosyncratic, small-audience pieces that would put a financial strain on a smaller brand. That frees Karl Lagerfeld up to get a little bit funny, and he’s done it with everything from ping pong paddles to surf boards, which fashion obsessives are known to use as home decor. In this case, he’s taking his talents to the beach.

The set, which is part of the brand’s Metiers d’Art 2016 Paris in Rome collection and in stores now, will set you back $1,650 for the towel and tote together. The pair are made of cotton terrycloth patterned to look like classic Chanel tweed, and the material and color variation mean that they’d actually make a pretty functional pool set if you wanted to use them for their intended purpose. If you’re gonna drop the money, you’ll probably end up leaving them safe in your fabulous cabana, though.

This fancy set shows off a practical color variation, which includes black, white and gray composed, and it will be apparently perfect for everyday use. However, considering that price-tag of the collection, it is hard to see the match of this set around, there could not be any other similar beach set.
